Same But Different

It would later become known as P.U.L.S.E. but before all that it was first aired here in the States as a Pay Per View event and later broadcast in the UK, on 15th of November 1994 on BBC1 and Radio One FM.  Lucky for us someone that night recorded it from their FM stereo receiver.

A big difference here is there’s no James Guthrie post production, so the sound isn’t as processed as the official video release of P.U.L.S.E. This has more of a raw, “feed from the desk” sound with the warmth of an FM broadcast.  So… Same but different.

Live and uncut from Earls Court, 20 October 1994.  Here’s the playlist.

  1. There’s also a pre-fm recording circulating without any overdubbing. The radio broadcast added some overdubs to correct a few mistakes.

  2. This sounds too good to have come from a cassette. Maybe a DAT? I wonder who taped this? Anyway I love it, I listen to this and raw sound of thunder all the time. I watched this on BBC 1 at the time along with the omnibus documentary. I then listened to my dad’s DSOTM vinyl.

  3. Thanks so much for this prescription Dr, it’s bought welcome relief and fond memories of actually being at this show. Nice to hear it in full without the shortened/edited “comfortably numb”. I had a video from the bbc broadcast with the long cut of CN and was happy to see myself in the crowd as the camera followed the plane fly from the upper right side of earls court right passed me but the recut DVD ditched that bit much to my disappointment. This makes up for it thank you!

  4. This is great! I always thought that Sam Brown makes the best GGITS-performances in the “modern” PF-era, DG and RW latest tours included. She sort of steps out of the “soul” inheritance of the original and does something original. It’s raw, haunting and personal but still true to the chilling sadness of the song.

    • PAUL MEEEEEEEE 2,..AV STILL GOT THE EMI AND PINK FLOYD PLC? RESERVE THE RIGHTS TO USE YOUR LIKENESS POSTERS, TOOK 2. LOLM WAS ALSO THE NIGHT ENIGMA APPEARED AT THE START OF ABITW, think they did top of the pops too, that night from sound check?,,,,,possibly

  5. Hi Doctor! Thanks for the new podcast! I have a question: where did the compositions from the ‘Colors of Infinity’ without movie noises (appear on the Internet)? Maybe it’s tracks from Blu-ray version?

  6. Hi,
in Germany the concert was broadcasted on the 20th of October 1994 on “Premiere”, only a few of people had an account for this ppv-tv-channel. The first 45 minutes were not decoded, the rest was only receivable with an account. I was looking for someone by newspaper advertisement (<- google-translator) who would tape the concert for me on vhs. I've found someone and payed 20 Deutsch Mark (10€) for taping and I just have the cassette still today. I hated the annoyiong moderator Stephanie Tücking with her shrill voice… But it was a great event to see Pink Floyd live on German tv!

  7. After hearing some other 94 tour recordings, the pulse recording has an uninspired, almost on autopilot, feel to it. Gilmour himself has noted how late in the tour he feels like he’s ‘played every lick in the book’ .
Bought it when the CD light had a heartbeat. Sounded OK back then.
Anyways, thanks for sharing this Doctor.
